Information on John Carrier, Candidate for District 5 Supervisor

John Carrier

My name is John Carrier and I am currently running for District 5 Supervisor.  I would like to thank the residents of District 5, whose support has been invaluable to my campaign thus far.  I look forward to the continued support of the community before the November election.  I would also like to thank everyone that has taken the time to speak with me, sharing their insights and experiences on living and working in Mariposa County.  I have genuinely enjoyed all the information I have received from the people of Mariposa.  I look forward to having a chance to meet and speak with, not only residents of District 5, but with others within the community that I have not yet had the opportunity to meet. I want to hear any concerns you may have, and share with you the plans and ideas I have for a better Mariposa.  I am diligently working to earn your support for the position of District 5 Supervisor, so I may give back to the community that has given so much to my family and me.

I would like to take a moment and tell you why I am so interested in this community. My family came to Mariposa from San Diego 16 years ago due to a job promotion.  I was offered a position as the Cal Fire Forestry Equipment Manager for the Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit.  I had the choice of residing in Merced, Madera, or Mariposa County.  Before making any decisions, my family and I took a trip to explore our options for our new life.  By the end of our first day in Mariposa, we knew that this was the place we wanted to call home.  Mariposa is, and always will be our home.  The community graciously welcomed, not only my wife and I, but also our children who were awarded invaluable opportunities from the community.  We are thankful to the people of Mariposa for the opportunities and support we have received. We have worked, and will continue to work, to give back to the community so that others can benefit in the same way we have.

I worked at the Cal Fire Mariposa Unit for 5 years.  Working at this Unit allowed me the chance to better understand the operating procedures of the County.  During my 28 years of service working for the State of California, I gained a multi-faceted understanding of how decisions made by various government agencies affect entities, not only at the State level, but also at the County level. I have a thorough understanding of how decisions can work their way up from the community level to the State level, and also the way those made at the State level work their way down to the County.  I believe these experiences will be of great value to the residents of District 5, and Mariposa County as a whole.  While at Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit my concern was the safety and protection of Mariposa.  As I promoted from the Unit to the Region Level, and eventually to the Statewide Level, my concern for Mariposa and my community has always remained one of my priorities.

My concern is not only for the safety and protection of Mariposa but also the livelihood of the County and the community.  One of my main focuses as Supervisor would be fiscal responsibility, integrity, and accountability.  One important element I feel Mariposa needs in order to continue to improve, is instituting attractions that will help encourage and promote tourism within Mariposa itself, especially during the Park’s “Off-Season”.  By drawing visitors from outside the area into Mariposa, not just to the Park but to Mariposa itself, we can increase County revenue.  Mariposa is rich in history, cultural diversity, and natural landscapes and we can share this with others.  By promoting these aspects of the County, we can attract visitors from outside the County.  Visitors can stay, and shop locally, promoting sales tax revenue, and the livelihood of local businesses.  By doing so, we can diversify our economic base, while still maintaining the integrity of Mariposa’s much loved rural quality of life.

I sincerely believe my ideas, values, commitment and work ethic will best serve the residents of District 5, and I ask for your support and vote in November. Your vote will help ensure and maintain the quality of life we have all come to love here in Mariposa. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.  I look forward to speaking with you in the near future.
I thank you in advance for your consideration and support,
